Making the next step impossible to miss.
Designing clarity into a mortgage journey built around speed.
MPowered promised brokers lending decisions in one day. But speed only works when everyone knows what needs to happen next. We redesigned the application experience around status, ownership and action, helping brokers keep cases moving without needing to ask what was happening.

01 - Context
A fast process can still feel uncertain.
MPowered had built its proposition around making lending decisions within one working day.
But brokers could not always see what was happening inside an application, whether they needed to act or what would happen if they didn’t.
That uncertainty created avoidable support calls and interruptions for operational teams.
The problem wasn’t necessarily that cases were moving slowly.
It was that brokers couldn’t always see them moving.

02 - The idea
Turn progress into action.
A conventional progress bar could show where an application was.
We needed to show something more useful.
What has happened? What happens next? Who owns the next action? And what are the consequences of waiting?
Those questions became the organising principle for the experience.
Instead of treating the timeline as a passive record of progress, we designed it as an active communication layer between the mortgage platform and the broker.
Not simply where you are.
What you need to do next.

03 - The experience
Designed around four questions.
Every decision had to help a broker answer something within seconds of opening a case:
Do I need to do anything now?
Where do I need to do it?
What happens if I don’t?
Application status became more prominent. Alerts were connected to meaningful actions. Ownership of the next step became explicit.
And the timeline created a persistent mental model for understanding how an application was progressing.
The interface stopped asking brokers to interpret the system.
The system started explaining itself.
04 - Evidence
Designed around what brokers need to know.
Clear status, obvious actions and a visible path to getting the application moving.
The experience was redesigned around the questions brokers need answered when they open a case: where is it, what needs attention, what do I need to do next and what happens if I don’t?
Know where the case is
Application progress is surfaced through a clear stepped timeline, giving brokers an immediate view of where the case sits within the mortgage journey.
Rather than expecting brokers to interpret activity across the application, the interface creates a consistent place to understand current status and what comes next.

Know what needs action
Status alone isn’t enough. The experience makes ownership explicit, distinguishing between activity happening within the platform and actions that require the broker’s attention.
Alerts and next steps are brought into the context of the application, helping brokers understand what they need to do without chasing an update.

Know what happens next
The timeline explored how consequence could be communicated as well as progress.
When an action affects the journey, the experience can show how the application changes and why. This helps brokers understand the relationship between what they do and how quickly a case can move forward.
05 - Proof
Clarity without compromising speed.
Better visibility helped brokers self-serve, while maintaining the one-day lending promise.
Reduction in broker support calls
Over 90 days
Lending decisions within one day
For fully packaged applications
05 - Outcome
Clarity keeps things moving.
The redesigned case summary and stepped timeline were built around a simple principle: brokers should never need to ask what is happening or what they need to do next.
Making status, ownership and action explicit gives brokers greater confidence to self-serve, reduces unnecessary intervention and helps applications continue moving through the platform.
Because delivering a fast mortgage decision isn’t only about making the technology faster.
It’s about removing the uncertainty around it.
